The Dead Sea
Did you know that the Dead Sea is the lowest point on the earth's surface ?
People have called it the Dead Sea because it contains so much salt that only very tiny organisms can live in it . There are no fish or plants in the Dead Sea.
However, it has some other very unusual properties. For example, it is so dense with salt that every one floats in it.
But why does the water stay so salty?
Fresh water enters the lake from rivers , including the River Jordan – but the Dead Sea gets only four inches of rain in the north per year and two in the south .
And because the area is so hot and dry, water evaporates very quickly, leaving the salt behind.
However, as well as salt, the Dead Sea contains very high amounts of many minerals, some of which are good for your health . These are in the water and the mud at the bottom of the sea.
People throughout history have used the salt and minerals to keep their skin, joints and circulation healthy .
The Dead Sea was so famous for its health benefits that cleopatra is claimed to have built factories nearby, using the minerals to make cosmetics and soap.
Soap and oil were very important to the ancient Egyptians, who used them to protect their skin and hair against the strong heat of the sun.
Nowadays, many people from all over the world go to resorts by the Dead Sea, and cosmetics companies use the mud at the bottom of the sea to make products for the skin .
His Majesty king abdullah the second is committed to enhancing tourism in the Dead Sea .
Under his partonage, leading investors, government representatives , and professionals are constantly exploring the region's potential in all sectors of the travel and tourism industry.
International tourism in the area has been booming and demand continues to increase.
The Dead Sea is a unique and vital part of thid heritage.
However, because of climate change, it is now shrinking.
To prevent this , there is a plan to bring water all the way from Red Sea through a very long tunnel . In this way we can keep the Dead Sea alive!
